LHS E-STAR

The Washington Learning Health System Embedded Scientist Training and Research (LHS E-STAR) Center provides an exciting opportunity for early career scientists to receive training and mentorship to build their skills and experience in transforming primary care. The Center is a collaboration among leading research organizations with expertise in LHS training and diverse primary care organizations (PCOs) from across the state. Working together, these organizations will build long-term partnerships to sustain and advance LHS research while training the next generation of independent scientists to help integrated health systems and community health centers meet the challenges of providing equitable, high-quality primary care.

The Washington Learning Health System Embedded Scientist Training and Research (LHS E-STAR) Center provides an exciting opportunity for early career scientists to receive training and mentorship to build their skills and experience in transforming primary care. In a learning health system, researchers and health care organizations work in partnership to continually improve care and health across diverse populations in real-world care settings.

LHS E-STAR Center goals

  1. Build new infrastructure to support bidirectional research-health care partnerships

  2. Train 7 scholars to conduct embedded LHS research in partnership with PCO leaders

  3. Lead embedded LHS research in participating PCOs

Partners in transformation

By building capacity in healthcare organizations and training scientists to conduct research that serves the priorities of our diverse partner health care organizations and their patients, the E-STAR Center will pave the way for LHS research that improves care and patient health. Our research will be practical, equitable, patient-centered, and sustainable.

Congratulations to our second cohort of E-STAR scholars!

The Washington Learning Health System Embedded Scientist Training and Research Center is excited to announce 3 new scholars: Kaboni Gondwe, PhD, RN; Lily Shapiro, PhD; and Mayuree Rao, MD, MS. These scholars will partner with leaders from Kaiser Permanente Washington and Veterans Affairs (VA) Puget Sound Health Care System to conduct research aimed at transforming primary care.

These 3 scholars join our two inaugural E-STAR scholars, who entered the program in 2024. We are excited to see the impact that our new E-STAR scholars will have through the research they lead and the partnerships they develop. Their projects exemplify the mission of the E-STAR program to foster the next generation of health system scientists and leaders while conducting research to improve health outcomes.

This fall, the E-STAR program will announce a call for letters of interest for the third cohort of scholars who will partner with HealthPoint and the Community Health Association of Spokane (CHAS Health). For more information about this opportunity, please reach out to LHS-ESTAR@kp.org.
